Nova PhDs

A forum for grads of Villanova's Philosophy PhD program

North American Society for Philosophical Hermeneutics
Jamey Findling posted the following in a recent comments thread. I thought it would be worthwhile to have it on the front page, so I am taking the liberty of posting it here, with some minor editing:

"I thought I would pass along this link. It's the homepage for the (rather awkwardly named) society that Ted and I, along with some others, have been working on. Our first conference is this coming weekend, so it'll be nice to see things come to some measure of fruition. There will also be a satellite session at SPEP this Fall, at the usual Thursday morning time, for those arriving early."
SPEP Update
I know the conference schedule won't come out for another few weeks, but the official letters of acceptance came out a couple weeks ago--so, I figured that I would let you know that the following Nova PhDs-related panel has been accepted:

The Contemporary Import of Hegel's Aesthetics

Ammon Allred, “On the Lyrical Presentation of History: Hegel and the Modern Poem”

J.C. Berendzen, “The Public Design of the Shape of Spirit: Hegel and Contemporary Architecture”

Theodore George, “Radical Passivity, Resistance, and Art: Agamben’s Unworking Of Hegel’s Aesthetics”

I, personally, am certainly looking forward to sharing the stage with my esteemed former colleagues. The loser of the panel buys the shots...

Are there any other Nova folks out there who are giving papers at SPEP?
Villanova Robe Pictures
aha. i didn't realize we could do that! fantastic. first, here is a picture of me, jack, and tom, for comparison. the one thing is, i'm not entirely sure the white is velvet on these (at least, i can't tell that it is from the pictures.)

here is a better one with just jack.

here's one with father dobbin.

and finally, one outside with jack and dobbin both in it, for comparison, so you can see that the color is in fact the same (though they look different from just the indoor/outdoor shot comparison).

how many MB's of storage do we have available on this site? i don't want to overload it — i'll pull these down if they're taking too much up.
picture test
This is a test, for John's benefit, to see how the uploading and posting of pictures works.

It is actually quite easy. Under "tools" in the post-authoring page, select "upload and insert a picture" and it will be fairly intuitive.
Cap and Gown
It's of course that time of the year. Unfortunately, I will not be able to do attend graduation at AU this year (my first) since my sister is graduating the very same day from Bryn Mawr. But I hae been thinking about this issue for a while. I really wish we had a proper cap and gown for our phd. Being the only doctoral program at Nova, we don't have our own school's colors, or gown. Other schools do. The generic cap and gown we got from Nova for graduation had one major virtue: it was free. But it is alrady falling apart.

Is there anyway we could start a tradition of cap and gowns? I was thinking about buying a typical philosophy phd online — with the blue stripes — to have for good, but it'd be nice to have a nova one. Any thoughts?

(By the way, Why is there a comment period? Is there dairy in comment for them to expire?)
article
I recently learned that an article I submitted to International Philosophical Quarterly has been accepted. The piece is titled “Elements of a Post-Metaphysical and Post-Secular Ethics and Politics: Albert Camus on Human Nature and the Problem of Evil," and it will appear in the June, 2007 (!) edition. The seed of this paper was planted in the "Body Politics" course Tom Busch offered a few years ago.
