Louis Pojman
I just heard about this today. Louis Pojman passed away a couple of months ago. He died of Hepatitis C, contracted years ago through a contaminated blood transfusion. He was the author or editor of 34 books and over 100 articles.

I have taught a number of his essays in my ethics courses. Though I never found myself in agreement with him, he was a formidable figure in the field of ethics. He also had a kind of honesty that I found refreshing, particularly in his work on capital punishment. There again, I could never agree with him but he was very much worth reading and teaching.

There will be a memorial service in NY during the APA: 2pm at the All Souls Unitarian Church in Manhattan on the 30th of December.

Here is his site: http://www.louispojman.com

we actually use a couple of the pojman anthologies that i think are quite good in courses here at Western Carolina University; i didn't realize that he had passed away.

Al Plantinga had told me this sad news a couple months ago. It brought back a wonderful memory for me: last fall (2004) when I was on sabbatical in Cambridge, Louis was also there with his wife (a lovely person). Deanna and I, Louis and his wife, were all guests of Al Plantinga at Clare College, one of the oldest in Cambridge (Al was delivering the Stanton Lectures). Together we enjoyed the highlight of my time there: a "high table" with fellows from the college, complete with sherry in the faculty parlor, etc. At the time, Louis was preparing for a trip to Iran. He was an incredibly charitable person, who took a genuine interest in everyone he met. And despite his many accomplishments, was unassuming and humble. May he rest in peace.
