more robe questions
okay, so i think i've decided just to do the standard black with PhD blue velvet panels. the next questions are, what company did those of you who already have robes use, and how much should i expect to pay for a quality gown? i probably need to order it this week to get it before our august 5 graduation that i have to attend...

I, by the way, would be interested in the answer to John's questions as well. The various gown websites are rather convoluted...

When I asked around at graduation, folks said they had paid anywhere from $200 - $500 for their gowns. One thing I keep thinking about is how hot it is here in May and Sept (the two months I have to wear it), and how I really don't want heavy, high-quality fabric that will be ridiculously hot. My own plan is to buy the blue felt and white piping and take the cheaper Villanova gown to my tailor and ask him to make the stripes and piping all nice and clean up the hems on the gown. I'll let you know how it works out. I'm guessing I can do the whole thing for under $75. --Tim

John Whitmire:
it's significantly more expensive than your plan, but herff-jones has a 50% wool gown (= breathes a lot better = cooler, than any of the 100% polyester fabrics) that's like 550 base for their mid-line model.

I have not followed this discussion, but: Jack mentioned to me during the graduation ceremony that he has the robe and such that he had because he is an endowed chair. With the chair comes the blue felt and white "piping."

Oh, and congratulations to those who are on panels at SPEP. Do you ever wonder why SPEP avoids contemporary politics? - I do.
